All was Well
There was a beautiful family in Dindugal - a father, mother, a daughter and son. Arivazhagan the father was working in a Diary company as Accounts Assistant. The mother Shabiya was a homemaker. Shanvika was a two-and-a half year-old kid and Rakshan Arav was a toddler. The family never imagined even in their dreams that they would celebrate Shanvika’s third birthday inside a hospital.
Shanvika and her Symptoms
In the year 2016, Shanvika had frequent dry coughs with a hoarse sound. There was a swelling near her neck (enlarged lymph node) that would never go away. She did not eat well and had trouble swallowing food. She had frequent bouts of cold and fever. Worried about the health of Shanvika, Arivazhagan took her to her maternal grandmother’s house in Madurai.
Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL)
In Madurai, Shanvika underwent a lot of medical tests at Madurai Meenakshi Mission. The doctors diagnosed that she was suffering from childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). ALL is a type of cancer that occurs when the bone marrow produces too many immature white blood cells.
Arivazhagan desperately searched for financial help
Doctors recommended chemotherapy treatment, but Arivazhagan was not able to pay the initial advance amount and subsequent payments to Madurai Meenakshi Mission. A single injection cost 25K to 30K. If not treated early, in few months ALL could be fatal. Arivazhagan met Ruchita, a social worker, and explained his plight. Ruchita promised to help Arivazhagan and referred him to Sankalp Beautiful World. Sankalp was an NGO in Chennai working to help patients suffering from cancer.
Sankalp helps Shanvika
Arivazhagan reached out to Sankalp team, and explained about the financial problems he faced in treating Shanvika. After going through the reports that Arivazhagan gave, Sankalp under their SHADOW program, gave a token amount to Arivazhagan to overcome the initial hurdles in treatment.
Later, Sankalp team told Arivazhagan that they will help to fundraise for Shanvika. The Sankalp team asked Arivazhagan how he preferred to fundraise for his daughter – either through TV, newspaper, or website. Arivazhagan preferred to fundraise through website mode.
Sankalp setup a fundraising page for Shanvika. They spread the fundraising message through WhatsApp and other social media channels. Help poured in from different avenues and Sankalp was finally able to handover a cheque for 3 lakhs to Arivazhagan.
Silver Linings in the Cloud
The treatment ordeal that started on Nov 3rd, 2016 is still going on though at less frequent intervals. Arivazhagan is very thankful to Sankalp for providing timely help. He would have otherwise taken a loan and would not able to provide a better lifestyle for his family. Now, Arivazhagan has placed his daughter in a less crowded school and provides all the nutritious diet that she needs for better health. Thanks to Sankalp, Arivazhagan and his daughter overcame the initial hiccups in treatment and got timely help. A friend in need is a friend indeed. Sankalp was a real friend for Shanvika.
